How knav write works
knav write is off until you turn it on, one app at a time. Each app has its own switches. Write lets your AI change the app's structure. The four Records switches each allow one thing with records. The "Ask me before" switches choose which changes knav asks you to approve first.

Step 1: You ask your AI coding agent for a change.
Step 2: knav reports what the change touches.
Step 3: If the change matches an "Ask me before" switch you turned on, knav asks you to approve it on this site before it runs. knav always asks before a change to login or security settings, a user-role delete, or a page move under or out of a login page.
Step 4: The knav program on your computer sends the change to Knack. knav then checks the app and logs the result.
Step 5: Your agent can undo its most recent change to a part of your app within 7 days, if nothing has changed it since. Deletes and record changes can't be undone.
Your apps only
knav works only on apps you registered and proved you manage.
Copy before a delete
By default knav tries to save a copy of a field's or table's data on your computer before deleting it, and a copy of records before deleting or bulk-changing them. The copy can fail or be incomplete, and putting data back is manual. Do not rely on it.
Kill switch
Stops knav from accepting new changes and approvals on your account. A change that already started can still finish. It does not stop an AI that uses your Knack API key directly.
Where your data goes
Records go from your computer to Knack and to your AI client, and from your AI client to the AI provider you use. They do not go to the knav server. Your Knack API key stays on your computer.
These steps and settings apply to changes that go through knav write. knav cannot make your AI follow them. Your AI can skip them, for example by using your Knack API key to change the app directly.
knav write is experimental and can delete live data
- knav write guides your AI agent, but it cannot control it. An agent can ignore the checks and approvals, or change your app directly with your Knack API key.
- You may not be able to get deleted or changed data back. Do not rely on knav's copy before a delete or on undo. Test on a copy of your app and keep your own backups.
- knav write uses Knack endpoints that Knack does not publish or support and has not approved. Knack can change its builder at any time without notice. Avvera may fix knav write after such a change, and promises neither a fix nor a date. Until then a change can do something unexpected, including deleting data.
- knav write has not been tested on next-gen Knack apps.

Questions
Is knav write safe on a live app?
No tool that lets an AI agent change an app is safe on live data. knav write is experimental and likely has some bugs. It can delete live data, and you may not be able to get it back. Start slow, with small changes on a copy of your app, and check each result. Most structure changes are easy to reverse, but deleted fields and tables, and their data, are not. Before an important change, ask your agent to back up your app schema (1 credit). The backup holds the app's structure and custom code, not its records. On a live app, turn on "Ask me before: All changes" and keep your own backups.
Does knav see my records?
knav read does not read records. knav write lets your AI read and change records, but only in apps where you turned on the Records switches. The knav program on your computer does this with your Knack API key.
How is this different from Knack MCP?
knav read has more complete coverage and understanding of your whole app schema. knav write can change almost any part of your app schema and its records.
Can I use knav write in claude.ai or ChatGPT?
Not in the browser. knav write runs a program on your computer, so it needs an AI agent that runs there too, such as Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or the ChatGPT desktop app. knav read works everywhere, including claude.ai and chatgpt.com.
Where does my data go?
With knav read, the knav server reads your app's structure and custom code from Knack to answer your AI's questions. It never reads your records. With knav write, the knav program runs on your computer and sends each change to Knack with your Knack API key, which stays on your computer. Records go from your computer to Knack and to your AI client, and from your AI client to the AI provider you use. They do not go to the knav server.
Is knav write HIPAA compliant?
No. Avvera does not sign HIPAA business associate agreements (BAAs), and knav write is not designed for protected health information. If you use knav write on an app with health information, be careful with the Records switches. With a Records switch on, records go to your AI agent and to the AI provider you use. Unless you have a BAA with that provider, you should probably keep the Records switches and "Allow field deletions" off. Deleting a field deletes its data in every record, and Knack can't undo it. This is for you to decide.
What is Knavigator MCP?
It is the Knavigator app, now as an MCP you can talk to directly using your favorite LLM. Connect it to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Grok, and any other MCP-capable client, and ask about your Knack app's structure in plain language. With knav write, an optional and experimental add-on, your AI coding agent can also make changes to your app.
How do I start?
Create an account with your email. Register your Knack App ID and prove you manage the app by pasting a token into it once and leaving it in place. Knavigator MCP only answers for apps you have verified. Then add the server to your AI client with OAuth or an API key, and ask your first question. The setup guide walks through each step and each AI client. knav write is optional, and you turn it on later, one app at a time.
How much does it cost?
1 successful knav read call = 1 credit, and a credit is 2 cents USD. A knav write change is 1 credit, a dry run is 1 credit, and a schema backup is 1 credit. You buy credits in one-time packs - see the pricing page.

What in a Knack app cannot be accessed by knav read?

knav write runs on your computer with your Knack API key. With an app's Records switches on, it can read and change that app's records.
Does Knavigator MCP work with both Classic and Next Gen?
Yes, it should. It has been extensively tested on Classic. There may be things in Next Gen that are read differently - if you encounter a bug, reach out to support@avvera.ca. Bugs in knav read are fixed quickly.
knav write has not been tested on Next Gen apps.
Can I still use the Knavigator Knack app?
Yes, absolutely. The Knavigator Knack app will remain free and available for you to use.
